When I began looking for work after raising my children, I wondered what possibilities I’d have. I wanted to work with people regularly and make them happy. I wanted a role I could hold for as long as I wanted, and I needed to be able to provide for my family. Luckily, that career was within reach.
I consider myself a Texan at heart. I came here as a teenager when my dad was given the unenviable task of setting up the first UPS in the state. He came home one day and announced to my mom, “I’m moving to Texas. You coming?” She said yes, of course, and I began imagining what it would be like. Surely, everyone wore boots and cowboy hats! There’s still something magical to me about the state, even as an adult. There aren’t a lot of places where you can see someone riding a horse down the road.
I’m the perfect amalgamation of my parents. I learned to work hard by watching my dad, and I got my sense of empathy and caring from my mom. I think all my siblings and I have those traits to an extent.
By the time I reached young adulthood, Texas had become the ideal place for me to explore. I had several jobs before my kids were born. I was everything from a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader to a river raft tour guide. I remember the latter especially fondly. The groups would sometimes have 30 or 40 people in them. I’m a people person, so the jobs I liked best were ones where I got to interact with a variety of people.
After staying home for years to raise my kids, my ex-husband and I got divorced, and I was on the hunt for a new job, possibly even a new career and industry. I started working for a title company and eventually went on to work for home builders. I learned more about the structure of a home and what to look for than I ever could have hoped for in any other scenario.
Because of my work in real estate, I knew a lot of REALTORS®. Over time I realized that was the job I wanted. Leaping into a commission-based job while supporting my family of four was a terrifying prospect. However, I felt if I didn't pursue it, I’d be left wondering about it forever.
I got licensed at what was probably the most challenging time, in 2008. By luck, I was working for a foreclosure company. Therefore, the upended market didn’t demolish my prospects before I’d even begun the work. Real estate is a job that can only be learned by doing. In my case, that sometimes meant writing up contracts longhand on a kitchen counter in a vacant home. My confidence grew, and with that came success.
I am always working to do my best for my clients and my family. I’m lucky to work in an industry focused on people, getting to know them and remaining connected to them.
I love hearing how my clients and their families are doing and telling them about my own family. My two daughters have bought houses. Luckily, they both used me as their agent and avoided awkward Thanksgiving dinners! My eldest is a newlywed. She has a master’s degree and works for a non-profit. My younger daughter, a mother of two, grew a bakery out of my old apartment’s kitchen. It became a successful business that she recently sold but still works at as the manager. My son has two kids as well. He’s taken after his late father as a photographer and currently works for the New Orleans Saints.
I can’t wait to catch up with more of my former clients. If any of them need anything, they’re always welcome to reach out. I look forward to hearing what I can do for you next!
My career helps make people’s dreams come true. I don’t think I could ask for anything better than that. This is an industry that’s constantly changing. I love that I can continue to provide service and knowledge to my clients, even if they’ve worked with me in the past.
I see myself as more than a real estate agent. I see myself as a resource. Whatever your needs may be, I have the perfect contact for you.
When it comes to buying, selling and investing, I have the knowledge and empathy to walk my clients through the process. It all comes down to listening and understanding the gravity of the investment. I have high standards for myself, which means I will always give top-notch service to clients. I look forward to finding out how I can achieve that for you!
To transform the real estate industry by helping others come to understand that whoever aspires to be great, must lead by serving others.
Sincerely,
Laurie Murdoch
